Since the beginning of the 21st century, the faculty of Hunan University has witnessed enormous improvement in its structure and a substantial increase in its number of outstanding talents, becoming a highly-qualified teaching group of abundant vigor.

As for 2020, it has a staff of nearly 4,000, of which 2,231 are full-time teachers. It has 12 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering; 6 members of the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council; 42 candidates of the state's special talents programs; 22 obtained supports from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; 21 gained supports from the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars; 6 winners of national famous teacher awards; 14 young and middle-aged leading talents in the Innovative Talent Promotion Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology; and, 134 candidates of the New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Program of the Ministry of Education. There are 4 innovative research groups supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and 8 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education.
