A large empirical literature has documented a positive relationship between education and health and between parental education and children’s health, but overlooked the potential role of adult children’s education in affecting parental health. In this paper we estimate the effect of adult children’s education on parental health outcomes using the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). We find that parents with better-educated children have better health, measured by a variety of health indicators, and that the relationship is causal. Using geographic variation in proximity to school as the instrumental variable, we find that an extra year of children’s education could increase the probability of parental good health status by 4 to 8.4 percentage points. Falsification tests support the IV strategy. We also find that smoking behavior, use of preventive care, and management of chronic conditions are important channels through which children’s education may improve parental health.

Dr. Zhiqiang Liu is Professor of Economics at University at Buffalo (SUNY at Buffalo). His research interests include applied microeconomics, Chinese economy, economic growth and development, and economics of crime. Most of his research projects concern the Chinese economy dealing with issues such as the return to and investment in human capital, the external effects of human capital, the role of institutions in economic growth and income distribution, and foreign direct investment as a channel for technology transfer. He has published numerous articles in academic journals, such as Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Human Capital, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Political Economy, and Journal of Urban Economics. He is currently Director of University at Buffalo Confucius Institute, Special-term Professor and Senior Research Fellow at China Center for Human Capital and Labor Market Research, Central University of Finance and Economics. He served on the Board of Directors of the Chinese Economists Society (CES) 2006-2007 and as a CES Regent Member 2013-2016. He also served on the editorial board and as guest editor of China Economic Review.
